Enlist the support of your spouse in directing the child to come to you with requests. Also enlist the spouse to forbid all disrespectful behavior and language toward you from the child. When the child sees the spouse giving respect and authority to you as a key decision-maker, the child has a better chance of treating you more respectfully.
